Our patient spotlight for this newsletter is Joan Kamps of
Bozeman. She is married to Randy and they have three children; Travis (23), Valerie (21)
and Racheal (14). Joan's hobbies include reading and playing the piano.
As a child, Joan struggled to hear what her first grade teacher
was saying. She failed hearing tests at school and was given further testing. Unfortunately,
nothing could be done. In 2000 she had another hearing test done and although the
technician could see on paper how poor her hearing was she told her that they could not
do anything - however, technology was changing and she gave her hope that within 10 years
something could be done.
The spring of 2005 was very frustrating for her husband as he was
repeating things to her 3 and 4 times and she couldn't
|
understand him. She went to the Hearing Aid Institute and had
another hearing test done. This time they could help! When Sandy put the hearing aids in
her ears for the first time in July, 2005 she needed to know how well Joan was hearing,
so she turned the water faucet on. She just cried because she had not heard water run like
that since she was 10 years old!
Hearing is such a precious gift and Joan is so blessed to have
hearing aids. Her family is so glad that she can hear what they say to her. She also
mentioned that since she got hearing aids the sound from the piano sounds really cool. She
said the sound is like a tree branching out in the springtime.
Joan has a masters degree in social work and she said that when
she was doing her undergraduate studies that she had a GPA of 3.2, which she blames a lot on
having to read lips. After she got her hearing aids while she was working on graduate school
her GPA jumped to 3.92 which she feels is because she could hear better.
Joan says that knowing that her hearing loss is genetic (from
her dad) and difficult to fit makes her very appreciative of Melissa, Sandy, and Don.
She says, "Thanks for all your help!"
Thank you, Joan, for sharing your story and reclaiming the
ability to Hear the Beauty of Life (and Montana!)

LISTEN TO THIS! HEARING AID CAN MAKE OLD FOLKS HAPPIER!
Hearing aids can combat depression in senior citizens
and improve their mental functioning, a new study shows.
"Many physicians do not routinely screen elderly people
for hearing loss, and they may not realize how much hearing aids help," says
Cynthis Mulrow, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Texas
Health Science Center.
In her study, 94 elderly people with some hearing loss
were fitted with hearing aids.
After four months, they were happier and less depressed
as a group, and were going out and socializing more, compared to another group of
94 elderly who didn't get the hearing aids. They also scored higher on mental
test scores.

A pastor preached an impassioned sermon of the evils of
television. "It steals away precious time that could be better spent on other
things," he said. He advised the congregation to do what he and his family had
done: put the TV away in the closet.
"That's right," his wife mumbled, "and it gets awfully crowded in there."

Near the end of a particularly trying round of golf,
during which the golfer had hit numerous far shots, he said in frustration to
his caddy, "I'd move heaven and earth to break 100 on this course." "Try heaven,"
the caddy replied. "You've already moved most of the earth."

A woman was driving her 8-year-old daughter
to her grandparents' home for an overnight stay. It was late, there was very little
traffic, and they were enjoying a peaceful ride. It was a far cry from the usual
chaos surrounding them when the woman drove her daughter to various activities during
rush hour. After a lengthy silence, her daughter said, "Mom, I have a question. When
you're driving, are you ever the idiot!?"

HEY, ALL YOU HUNTERS AND SHOOTING ENTHUSIASTS!!
|
When it comes to hunting and competitive shooting, reaction
time and timing are everything. Whether it's game and bird movement, trap release or
range commands, hearing is an important advantage in your shooting accuracy and
enjoyment, not to mention your safety.
The sportsman that excel are the ones who can take full
advantage of every sound, however slight, to hear their target before seeing it.
And because firearm use can damage hearing permanently,
shooter's ability to acquire and locate sounds is often diminished over time.
Now you can enhance this sense much like a scope and binoculars
do for your vision. Hear your target sooner and more clearly - taking full advantage of
one of your most powerful senses to increase your reaction time. All without interfering
with your firing position.
The easily adjusted Digital Amplifier allows you to fine-tune
the response based on your personal hearing preferences. It also features a Master Volume
Control, allowing you to make quick adjustments in the field for changing conditions.
Magnum Ear's compact design allows you to shoulder your firearm

HEARING AIDS - EXERCISE FOR THE BRAIN?
A hearing aid wearer wrote an article for the newspaper about how
people think you should hide the fact that you wear hearing aids. She was asked by someone if
she was really going to let anyone know she now wore hearing aids. When she replied that you
wouldn't hide the fact that you wore glasses the other person said that was different as
people of all ages wear glasses whereas hearing aids are for old people. That is what is
wrong with our worlds' perspective of the hard of hearing.
Yes, hearing aids are a pain! There are many adjustments to be made.
There are too many sounds; we live in a very noisy world. The toilet flushing sounds like a
creek running and the shrill shrieking of some woman and little kids can almost be too much.
But gradually the brain starts to work. Actors on TV don't speak foreign languages anymore
and they stop mumbling. Long forgotten sounds return and you start to understand better again.
The explanation for all this progression - You don't hear with your
ears, you hear with your brain. Electricity is carried by the nerves to the brain. Hearing aid
use is like exercise. If you want to keep muscles in shape, use them. Similar to a car that
sits out in the wet winter weather for years, it will rust out.
According to an old adage: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound
of cure." Although it is not possible to prevent or cure all the wear and tear of life and
Father Time there is plenty of help available. But you must be patient and willing to work at
hearing again. After not hearing properly for a long time your brain starts to rust and you
must clean it up again and retain it. So remember to exercise your brain and learn to hear
those forgotten sounds again!
